Its a complicated subject but I get asked all the time about viruses from my friends and co workers so I started a little research job.
*Most of the popular antivirus programs found today was used.
*Every antivirus program were fully updated prior to test and set to their deepest scanning settings.
*The exact virus count in the file is unknown but there are over 5,000.
*Scans were done on a P4 1.6c with windows 2000 Pro SP4.
=Results (only the top6 antiviruses)
Kaspersky 5 found 5,117 viruses
Trend Micro PC-cillin 2005 found 5,084 viruses
Symantec Norton 2005 found 5,028 viruses
McAfee VirusScan 10 found 5,026 viruses
Panda Platinum Internet Security V8 found 4,985 viruses
Avast.Professional.Edition.v 4.6 found 4,757 viruses
AVG Pro.V7.0 found 4,507 viruses
Although none of the Antivirus was perfect some was better then others;)
Conclusion :
Kaspersky 5- I just found out that actually kaspersky is the most powerful antivirus available on the net,
it found many viruses that no one else could find, the only 3 problems with it that it can only find viruses but not to remove them also its very heavy on resources and the "complete scan" can take about 3 hours.
Norton 2005- sucks - A true resource hog! also expensive, and the "complete scan" takes 2 long.
and one more thing isn't the best out there like many of us thinks.
AVG7-is overrated -its like norton many of us thinks its good only because others says so.
PC-cillin 2005- Pc-cillin is my choice it has more pluses then minuses finds allot of viruses also able to clean and remove them ,easy update, low on resources and fast "complete scan "from 1-1.5 hours.
Mcafee 10- well what can I say I was a big fan of mcafee but version 10 sucks badly I mean wtf is the story with the new updating system also it is not as good as it was after several tests some viruses couldn't be found anyways so far I'm recommending using mcafee 10 only if you can afford buying it and new virus DAT files.
